Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) is a key performance indicator used in the manufacturing industry to assess the efficiency and productivity of equipment. It provides a comprehensive snapshot of how effectively a manufacturing operation is being utilized. OEE is calculated by multiplying three factors: Availability, Performance, and Quality.

How is OEE Calculated?

To calculate OEE, you need to determine the individual components:

Availability: This measures the percentage of scheduled time that the equipment is available for production. It is calculated by dividing the actual operating time by the planned production time.

Performance: This assesses how well the equipment performs compared to its maximum potential. It is calculated by dividing the actual output by the theoretical maximum output during operating time.

Quality: This measures the proportion of good units produced compared to the total units started. It is calculated by dividing the number of good units by the total units produced.

Once these three factors are determined, they are multiplied together to get the OEE percentage: OEE = Availability × Performance × Quality.

Using OEE Data for Analysis

OEE data is invaluable for manufacturers as it provides insights into where improvements can be made. By analyzing the individual components of OEE, manufacturers can identify specific areas of inefficiency. For example, if Availability is low, it may indicate frequent equipment breakdowns or lengthy setup times. If Performance is lacking, it could point to suboptimal operating speeds or minor stops.
